Winners of the best #JoziWalks
Published 10 July 2017
Walk My Jozi rounded up their inaugural #JoziWalks weekend at Sophiatown the Mix with an awards ceremony.
The winning walks were chosen based on their follow-up presentation. In particular judges looked at how the walks helped shape and shift perceptions about their neighbourhoods among both residents and visitors, the successful involvement of community members and local organisations in the walk and how the overall experience presented the neighbourhood and its uniqueness.
A key theme that came up was the sense of “neighbourhood pride” that the walks evoked both among the organisers and participants.
Judges for theses awards were Laurice Taitz, publisher of Johannesburg In Your Pocket City Guide and Sharon Lewis, a city expert who formerly worked for the Johannesburg Development Agency.
It wasn’t easy to choose from among the 13 walks, as each contributed something special to #JoziWalks.
The judges’ selection:
1st Place: William Mathebula from Joe’s Lifestyle & Butchery- Alexandra for his walk through Alexandra
2nd Place: M. Lucky Nkali from Black Bite Productions cc. for the walk through Diepsloot
Joint 3rd Place: Sanza Sandile from Yeoville Dinner Club for A Pan Afrikan Plate for the Yeoville walk and Judith Muindisi and Monika Läuferts le Roux from Tsica Heritage Consultants for the La Rochelle walk.
Thank you to the Joburg Photowalkers for their photos of the day and the fantastic photos collected from all the walks.
