“Mural mural upon the walls” – A new project by GRIND cities
The 3 artists Freddy Sam, Nelson Makamo and Superblast were commissioned by GRIND to bring public art to New Doornfontein as a first step to creatively activate the area.
The first mural, ¨I am Because We Are¨, is located on the Access City building, which already has the famous Mandela mural on its western façade. This massive 40 meter art piece represents a springbok drinking by a river and its reflection in the water. Freddy Sam, the artist, explains: “The Springbok represents us as a nation and the river reflects ourselves and our community. Now that Mandela has passed, we are looking into our reflection and assessing our Ubuntu in the past, present and future”.
