The Johannesburg we remember was a city where businesses thrived, neighbourhoods bustled with life, and streets felt safe, welcoming residents and tourists alike. Over the years, however, parts of Jozi have faced decline. Streetlights, once a symbol of our city’s warmth and energy, are now too often dark or missing, leaving communities vulnerable, dampening economic activity, and eroding the sense of security we once took for granted.

But we’re making a change.

Jozi My Jozi, in partnership with caring citizens and supporters, is leading the charge to bring light back into our city and create a safer, walkable spaces for the walkable network within Jozi. Through our Light Up Jozi campaign, we aim to install streetlights and sustainable solar-powered lighting in areas where darkness has taken a toll. This isn’t about filling a gap left by the government; it’s about stepping up as a community and partnering alongside the government to help create a safe, revitalised Johannesburg while they focus on other pressing needs.

Why This Matters Now

Johannesburg’s decline in lighting has contributed to rising safety concerns, impacting residents and businesses alike. Statistics show that well-lit areas experience a significant reduction in crime, creating a stronger sense of community and drawing businesses and families back to the heart of the city.

Real Impact – What We’ve Achieved So Far

To date, we’ve successfully installed 614 solar-powered lights across several streets, illuminating key areas and making them safer and more welcoming. The immediate positive impact is evident, but we need further funding to extend this reach and ensure all vulnerable areas are covered.

Each solar light is equipped with GPS tracking, connected to a monitoring centre, helping safeguard against theft and ensuring the lights remain operational where they’re needed most.
