Why are Ecobricks an exciting solution to waste management?

In Johannesburg, our landfills are quickly reaching maximum capacity. And when Pikitup is unable to collect waste, the consequences are immediately obvious; streets pile up with litter and rubbish bins begin to smell.

The obvious solutions are to reduce the amount of single use plastic you consume, reuse as often as possible and recycle more. Also composting/ worm farming ‘wet waste’ is an option for residents with enough space, and helps a lot with recycling!

Unfortunately a lot of the rubbish we throw away is not suitable to be recycled.

Ecobricks provide a solution!

The ecobrick is not an entirely new concept, but one of the biggest challenges is finding a use for ecobricks once they are completed.

In some very exciting news, the Endangered Wildlife Trust has partnered with two schools in Hammanskraal to build benches and retaining walls out of Ecobricks for their food gardens. WWT have even partnered with Pick n Pay to provide drop off points for Ecobricks to make the process even more convenient.

Can you guess how much an EcoBrick should weigh? It needs to be strong and a 2 litre bottle should weigh 700+ grams. That’s a lot of plastic! The Endangered Wildlife Trust are going to be using these EcoBricks to build benches and raised gardens at Itireleng Primary School and Lefofa Primary School in Hammanskraal on 25 October. #PlasticRevolution

You can drop off your EcoBricks at all Pick n Pay Hypermarkets, as well as standard stores in Gauteng at Rosebank Mall, Cresta Mall, Mulbarton Mall, Hatfield Mall and Nicol Mall, and in the Western Cape at Tygervalley Mall and Constantia Mall.
