Gauteng’s river systems are facing an escalating crisis, the result of multiple, intersecting pressures including insufficiently treated wastewater, industrial pollution and anthropogenic litter. While many stakeholders have contributed to understanding and addressing this complex challenge, insights and efforts sometimes remain fragmented, obscuring opportunities for recovery.

The Gauteng Waterways Solutions Summit will bring together researchers, industries, community-based organisations, regulators, manufacturers of products with packaging, citizen scientists, and NGOs in a shared effort to co-develop actionable pathways for river system recovery.

  • Integrate knowledge for a systems-level understanding of the challenges facing Gauteng’s waterways;
  • Showcase innovative solutions and research-informed interventions;
  • Strengthen multi-stakeholder collaboration, especially with local industries and brand owners;
  • Launch a Community of Practice focused on data-sharing, learning, and scalable action.

This summit is a platform to engage key actors across sectors to play an active, solutions-oriented role in restoring the province’s vital water systems. It provides a space to go beyond understanding the problem, for the coordination and co-creation of lasting solutions, that leverage local experience, scientific knowledge, existing and emerging solutions, extended producer responsibility (EPR), and systems-level collaboration.

Through this collective effort, we aim to catalyse a more resilient, accountable and collaborative approach to waterway management in Gauteng, one rooted in coordinated, evidence-based action, shared responsibility, and long-term sustainability.
